Lakers place second at Buckley

BUCKLEY — The Bear Lake cross country team ran to a pair of second-place finishes on Saturday at an invitational in Buckley.

The Lakers were runners-up in both the boys and girls races, as Benzie took top honors in each.

“I feel good about it. Finishing second to Benzie — they’re a powerhouse — isn’t anything to be ashamed of for us,” said Bear Lake coach Tony Shrum of competing against a bigger school. “The times were good, and what I was impressed with most was how gutsy they were. They all ran hard with some pretty weird weather throughout the day.

“It started out nice and sunny, but about halfway through the girls race it dropped about 10, 15 degrees and started pouring rain.”

In the nine-team girls race, the Huskies paced the field with 23 points while the Lakers scored 68.

Bear Lake was paced by sophomore Keena Gilbert, who finished fourth overall in the time of 20:36. Gilbert was followed by teammates Faith Moerdyk (10th, 21:29), McKaya Groenwald (15th, 22:00), Kelly Babcock (16th, 22:03), Alycia Peterson (23rd, 22:58), Meredith Hengy (24th, 23:33), and Taylor Anderson (26th, 23:42).

Benzie scored 21 points to win the boys race, and was followed by Bear Lake with 67.

The Lakers’ John Girven led his team with a sixth-place time of 17:51. Following Girven were Bear Lake’s Jordan Anderson (13th, 18:34.1), Alex Barto (14th, 18:34.4), Jared Bair (16th, 18:42), Shane Peterson (18th, 18:50), John Michael Schoedel (20th, 19:02), and Cole Verrett (23rd, 19:30).
