CUSTER — Heading into Wednesday’s West Michigan D League jamboree at Mason County Eastern, Bear Lake coach Tony Shrum was planning on having his runners go out hard the first two miles.

Then prior to the race, he told the Lakers he had bad news and good news, and they opted to hear the bad first. Shrum said they were scrapping the plan.

“They said, ‘What? That sounds like good news,’” Shrum recalled. “With the heat and the course, we decided to hold off and we’ll save that for another day. The kids were happy. They weren’t really looking forward to it.”

Although the Lakers didn’t sprint out at the start, it didn’t matter as far as the results were concerned.

As usual, the Lakers dominated the jamboree as both the boys and girls took first. The Bear Lake girls were two points off a perfect score with 17, while MCE finished second with 82.

Keena Gilbert won her second jamboree with a time of 20:45.

“I think I did pretty good, I guess,” Gilbert said, admitting she was actually looking forward to the original race plan. “I kind of wanted to do it, but it was so hot it was probably best that we didn’t.”

Faith Moerdyk finished second (21:32), followed by teammates McKaya Groenwald (third, 21:39), Alycia Peterson (fifth, 22:45), Kelly Babcock (sixth, 23:01), Taylor Anderson (seventh, 23:09) and Meredith Hengy (eighth, 23:22).

The Bear Lake boys finished first with 21 points while Pentwater was second with 55.

John Girven went 2-for-2 in the jamborees so far by winning with a time of 18:02.

“It was a hot day to run, buy other than that it was good,” Girven said. “That’s why we take these days to do those training exercises. We’re still benefiting.”

Jordan Anderson took second in 18:25, followed by Laker teammates Shane Peterson (fourth, 19:05), Jared Bair (fifth, 19:11), Cole Verrett (ninth, 19:50), John Schoedel (11th, 20:03) and Alex Barto (12th, 20:16).

Bear Lake won the first two jamborees and will host the third next Wednesday before the league finals.

“There’s something to be learned from every race,” Shrum said. “Every course is different. A chance to get out and run the zig-zags and hit the hills a little bit, there’s nothing wrong with that. It’s a good opportunity for the kids to get another race under their belt.”
