WALKERVILLE — The Bear Lake cross country teams ran away with another pair of West Michigan D League titles Wednesday at the championship meet in Walkerville.

Both the Laker boys and girls, who have been the perennial powers in the league, finished first for the crown. Each team previously swept all three league jamborees this season.

“They came out and did what they had to do,” said Bear Lake coach Tony Shrum. “They ran the race well.

“What I was most happy with was we ran that Walkerville course in the first jamboree, about a month ago, and pretty consistently across the board, the girls were about a minute faster than they were month ago,” he added. “The guys, the same deal. On average, they were probably 30 seconds faster than they were before.”

The top Laker harriers were exactly that Wednesday as John Girven took first in the time of 18:21 for the boys and Keena Gilbert won the girls race in the time of 20:50.

“On a rainy day, which was actually kind of nice on the course because it’s pretty soft, it was a pretty good race,” Shrum said. “We’re all pretty pleased.”

Also for the girls, Faith Moerdyk placed second in the time of 21:33 and was followed by teammates McKaya Groenwald (3rd, 22:21), Alycia Peterson (4th, 22:25), and Taylor Anderson (6th, 22:50).

Following Girven in the boys race was Bear Lake’s Jordan Anderson (2nd, 18:50), Shane Peterson (4th, 19:12), Cole Verrett (5th, 19:20), Jared Bair (6th, 19:21), and John Michael Schoedel (7th, 19:49).

“This is what we’re working towards,” Shrum said of the collectively improving times. “We’ve got to take every meet one at a time and keep knocking those times down.

“When they can see that improvement they’ve made in a month, that can be pretty motivational for them.”
