Portagers Roll

WALKERVILLE — The Onekama boys basketball team rolled to a 69-35 West Michigan D League win at Walkerville on Thursday to stay unbeaten this season.

Bryce Reckow had 15 points and eight assists to lead the Portagers (4-0, 4-0 WMD), Jarett Sovereign scored 15 and Derek Hobart added 13 points and eight rebounds.

“It was a nice win coming off the break because you’re never sure how the kids will respond,” said Onekama coach Jim Hunter. “We’re showing spurts and streaks and starting to expand those.”

Onekama led 17-10 at the end of the first quarter and blew the game open by outscoring Walkerville 22-7 in the second for a 39-17 advantage at halftime. The Portagers outscored the Wildcats 22-14 in the third quarter to essentially put the game away.

“The defense is what got us that lead and that’s good to see,” Hunter said, adding that the game was a great chance to spread out the playing time.
