Pentwater holds on against Onekama

PENTWATER — The Onekama boys basketball team dropped a West Michigan D League game 65-50 at Pentwater on Friday night.

The Falcons led 21-19 after the first quarter and 44-35 at halftime and held off the Portagers (11-7, 9-5 WMD) down the stretch.

“We got within four in the second half, but we just couldn’t stay with them,” said Onekama coach Jim Hunter. “The 3 hurt us, but their rebounding hurt us too.”

Onekama had just 19 total rebounds.

“They got a ton of offensive rebounds,” Hunter said. “They hurt us on the glass.”

Quinn Matthews had 16 points, four rebounds and four assists on a sprained ankle to lead Onekama, Bryce Reckow had 12 points, five assists and four rebounds and Jarett Sovereign scored 10. Joe Eno chipped in five rebounds and Derek Hobart five assists.

Onekama held Pentwater to just seven points in the fourth quarter, but managed just five on its end.

“We never heated up. We did not shoot well at all,” Hunter said, estimating about 30-percent shooting from beyond the arc. “It’s tough to win a ballgame like that.”

The Onekama JV team beat Pentwater 63-42. Jordan Coe led the Portagers (14-4) with 13 points and Hunter Morley scored 12.
