BALDWIN — Hailey Kott got Onekama off to a high-flying start with 15 points in the first quarter and the rest of the team followed suit in a 65-26 West Michigan D League victory over Baldwin Wednesday night.

Kott wound up with 18 points while Lindsay Nesburg added 12 and Danielle Ward led the team on the boards with seven in the Portagers’ victory.

“(Kott) started off hot and the last game she played pretty good too and gave us a lift,” said Onekama coach Nathan Bradford. “I told the other girls to stay aggressive and attack the basket. It’s a good thing she started hot for us. The other girls contributed after that.”

“It just happened,” Kott said of her 15 first-quarter points. “I  just went to the hoop.”

Rebounding and shooting were key aspects for the Portagers, Kott said, adding that the team is still working on “boxing out.”

Marissa Kelly scored all of Baldwin’s points in a first quarter that ended with Onekama on top 25-6. Kott didn’t score in the second quarter, but her teammates, using several steals and fast breaks, were able to help the Portagers dominate the action.

Tawny Kott and Nesburg both scored six points in the second quarter. Nesburg connected on a 16-footer late in the quarter for a 40-11 lead. It was 42-11 at halftime.

Nesburg hit a pair of free throws early in the third to give the Portagers a 45-13 lead. Nesburg scored six points in the quarter for a 49-14 Onekama lead going into the fourth.

Hailey Kott and Jennica Mathieu scored baskets to open the fourth quarter for Onekama (2-5, 2-4 WMD), which led 53-14.

“I brought the JV team too,” said Bradford, noting that Baldwin doesn’t have a junior varsity team. “I was happy everyone had a chance to get in and most of the girls scored.”

Alex Torres led the Panthers (0-6, 0-5 WMD) with 11 points, followed by Kelly with 10.
