The Bear Lake boys and girls cross country teams both won the first West Michigan D League jamboree of the season on Wednesday at Mason County Eastern.

“I was happy with the way they ran,” said Bear Lake coach Eric Ross. “They’re progressing well.”

The Bear Lake girls took first with 19 points, MCE was second (44, Pentwater third (85) and Walkerville fourth (90).

Freshman McKaya Groenwald won with a time of 21:56, followed by Keena Gilbert (second, 22:12), Kelly Babcock (fourth, 23:09), Jaylee Brown (fifth, 23:09), Meredith Hengy (seventh, 24:52), Alycia Peterson (eighth, 24:54) and Danielle Ward (11th, 26:04).

The Bear Lake boys took first with 35 points, Crossroads Charter Academy was second (54), MCE third (70), Pentwater fourth (85) and Walkerville fifth (115).

John Given led the Lakers by taking third in 18:53, followed by Tyler Groenwald (fourth, 18:55), Shane Peterson (seventh, 19:24), Alex Barto (10th, 19:57), John Schoedel (11th, 19:57), Taylor Makowski (13th, 20:14) and Alex Ringel (14th, 20:17).

Ross said the MCE course isn’t a bit short like it used to be so his team runners didn’t finish as quickly as they thought they would. But, he’s not complaining.

“This will be the last week of our base workout and then we’ll get on to hills,” he said. “I like where they’re at at this point.”
