WALKERVILLE — The Bear Lake boys and girls cross country teams each picked up a second West Michigan D League jamboree win in as many chances Wednesday in Walkerville.

The Laker boys won with 23 points with Mason County Eastern placing a distant second (44) while the girls placed first with 18 points, also ahead of the second-place Cardinals (39).

Bear Lake senior Tyler Groenwald and his sister McKaya, a freshman for the Lakers, paced their respective fields in the jamboree. Tyler took an overall first place in the boys competition in the time of 18:19, while McKaya was the overall girls top runner in 23:02.

“Today was a training run,” said Bear Lake coach Eric Ross, citing that a canceled meet this past weekend forced the Lakers to adjust the training schedule a bit. “There was no meet Saturday, so I used this as a workout. We’ll do a hill workout (today) and a long training run on Saturday,” he added. “This week has worked out better than what I thought it would.”

Bear Lake’s Jaylee Brown finished second overall, behind Groenwald, in the time of 23:16, followed by teammates Kelly Babcock (4th, 23:36), Keena Gilbert (5th, 24:02), Alycia Peterson (6th, 24:48), Meredith Hengy (11th, 25:39), Alyson Fink (12th, 25:45), Danielle Ward (13th, 26:03) and Taylor Anderson (26:29).

For the boys, Tyler Groenwald was followed by teammates John Girven (3rd, 19:06), Shane Peterson (6th, 19:33), Alex Ringel (8th, 19:48), Taylor Makowski (9th, 19:56), John Schoedel (11th, 20:07), Jared Bair (12th, 20:18), Alex Barto (13th, 20:20), Stephen Verrett (14th, 20:43), Parker Sternberger (15th, 21:04), Kyle Nettler (17th, 21:22), Seth Harrington (22nd, 22:10), Josh Ide (25th, 22:49), Gerald Eipperle (28th, 24:10) and Bryson Waller (29th, 25:36).
