CUSTER — The Onekama girls track team finished first in Tuesday’s West Michigan D League jamboree at Mason County Eastern while the Portager boys placed third.

The Brethren boys and girls teams each placed second in the event. No individual results were available for the Bobcats.

“We kind of put people in other events to see how we could utilize them,” said Onekama girls track coach Bonnie Brown, whose team finished first in 10 events on the day. “They’ve got very tired legs.”

The Portager girls picked up a total of 183 points to distance themselves from the runner-up Bobcats, who finished with 93. Host MCE was third with 87. Picking up individual gold were Onekama's Nisha Collins in the long jump (15-8), Jaylee Brown in pole vault, Yumi Babinec in 100-meter hurdles (10.03), Kelly Babcock in the 1,600-meter run (6:16.50), Danielle Ward in the 300-hurdles (54.3) and Tobi Schoedel in the 800-meter run.

Onekama also took first in all four relay events. The team of Taylor Anderson, Kristen Santa, Babcock and Faith Moerdyk won the 3,200-meter relay (11:24), Brown, Ward, Collins and Breanna Fink won the 800-meter relay (1:58), Brown, Ward, Babinec and Fink won the 400-meter relay (54.5) and Brown, Babinec, Ward and Schoedel won the 1,600 (4:49).

The Portager boys took third with 101 points, falling short to first-place Big Rapids Crossroads (122) and runner-up Brethren (108).

“We’re just preparing them for the regional (in Brethren on Saturday),” Onekama boys coach Anthony Torres said. “They got a good workout today.”

The Portagers’ Raul Torres and Tyler Fogarty took the team’s pair of individual golds — Torres in shot put (38-foot-5) and Fogarty in pole vault (12-6) — while the 800-meter relay team of Tyler Groenwald, Fogarty, Ryan Pienta and Shane Peterson took first in the time of 1:40.93.
