Onekama vs. Mason County Eastern – Game 6

January 7, 2011

Heading down the road to another gym is never fun.  This would be only our second game on the road and the JV Portagers first game to play on the road.  After a disappointing loss 2 days prior we were looking to get back on track and were determined to win.

The contest would prove to be a close one staying within 3 points until the final buzzer.  The lead changed with each quarter and by the end of the third the Portagers were ahead 13-10.  It all came down to the fourth quarter.  Scoring became our biggest adversary with us only scoring 1 fourth quarter point while the Cardinals jumped ahead for the win scoring 15 fourth quarter points to end the game at 25-14.

The offense was led by Sierra Hull, Elizabeth, and Kaitlin with 4 points each.  Nisha finished off the scoring with 2 points.  This was a case of several shots but few baskets.  The Cardinals jumped ahead when we tried to be more aggressive after losing the lead and they were able to get some easy baskets and some added free throws.

Sierra Hull came up big on the defensive end grabbing 13 boards with 2 blocks and a steal.  Kaylan also played big underneath bringing down 8 rebounds and adding 3 assists and a block.  Elizabeth finished with 6 rebounds, 2 assists, and 2 steals.  Kaitlin had a good defensive performance with 4 rebounds, 5 assists and a steal.  Sami ended the game with 2 rebounds while Faith and Nisha each finished with a rebound.

This game turned out to be very disappointing for us as we believe we had a good chance at winning the contest.  Still, this team’s determination continues to show and we will continue to improve as the season goes on.  We look forward to the next contest as we head to Brethren to face the Bobcats in a second challenge on the season.  The first game was close and exciting so we look forward to having another good contest.  We travel to Brethren on January 12, 2011.
