Onekama vs. Manistee Catholic Central  ~ Game 5

January 5, 2011

A long break between games always makes a coach nervous about how the team will perform at the next game.  We were coming into the game off of the excitement of our first win so that was a positive on our side.  The time off would prove to be the major factor in the outcome of this game.

The Portagers started out with a scoring slump while the Sabers couldn’t miss the basket.  The Sabers jumped to a 14-2 lead at the end of the first quarter and they would never look back as they continued to drop the ball in the hoop for score after score.  The Portager offense got better but it wouldn’t be enough as the Sabers went home with a 50-21 victory.

The offense was led by Kaylan and Kaitlin with 7 points each.  Nisha and Sami each finished with 3 points and Sierra Hull finished out the scoring with a point.  Several good shots were taken, but the ball wouldn’t go in the hoop for us.

Sami led the defense with 7 rebounds.  Kaylan and Sierra Hull each finished with 4 rebounds and Kaylan added 2 blocks to her stats.  Kaitlin ended the game with 3 rebounds and a steal while Elizabeth finished with 3 boards, an assist, a steal and a block.  Faith finished with a rebound and Nisha added a steal and 2 blocks.  The defense played good but it wasn’t enough for how well the Sabers shot the ball.

We will continue to work hard in practice and prepare ourselves for the next contest.  We travel to Mason County Eastern on January 7, 2011.  This should be a tough match-up and we will have to play at our best to get the second win of the season.

Go Portagers!   Coach Torrey
