FUTURE STARS PERFORM AT ONEKAMA
HALFTIME SHOW
They took to the basketball court on
Friday night with tense excitement. After weeks of steady practice, they
were poised and ready for their big moment. The crowd at the Onekama
School gym welcomed them with applause.
There they stood…the future stars of Onekama Girls Basketball.
On Friday, February 25, during the halftime of the Varsity basketball
game between Onekama High School and Mason County Eastern, a group of
Onekama elementary students entertained the crowd with a fifteen-minute
scrimmage.
The girls, from grades first through fourth, were participants in the
Winter Basketball Clinic that took place at the Onekama School gym on
Saturday mornings during January and February. Friday night’s scrimmage
was the culmination of the clinic, and a chance for the girls to show
off their growing skills.
The clinic was run entirely by volunteer parent coaches, who shared
their time and talents to give the girls a chance to keep active during
these winter months. It is the fourth year of the elementary basketball
clinic. The volunteer coaches – including Charity Domres, Terry
Ingleright, Dennis McCarthy and Heidi Wisniski – have been pleased with
the response to the program.
“We were thrilled by the enthusiasm and consistent effort demonstrated
by girls over the past two months,” commented parent and coach Heidi
Wisniski. Wisniski’s two daughters, Sophie and Chloe participated in the
clinic and the scrimmage.
“The scrimmage gave all the girls from the clinic a chance to feel what
it is like to play in front of a crowd,” added Wisniski. “We hope the
experience was fun for the girls, and that it will help prepare them for
future games. From the smiles I saw on their faces tonight, I’d say the
scrimmage was a definite success.”
