come up short against Cards

ONEKAMA — Onekama couldn’t close
its season on a win at home as the Portagers fell 56-46 Thursday to
Mason County Eastern.
“For the first half I thought we did a pretty good job,” Onekama
coach Nathan Bradford said, citing his team kept the game close,
trailing just 21-18 into the break. “They hit a shot at the buzzer
to go up by three at halftime. Then we just came out in the third
quarter a little flat, when they got the lead. We played with them
in the fourth but just couldn’t dig ourselves out of the hole.”

The Cardinals jumped out to a 36-29
lead heading into the fourth and kept the Portagers at bay from there.
“I told the girls I thought we played pretty well other than the lull in
the third quarter,” Bradford said. “Heading into districts, we need make
sure we play a full game.” On senior night the Portagers were led by
their lone senior, Taylor Hagen who scored 19 points with five rebounds,
two assists and two steals.
Onekama's Jennica Mathieu scored 10 with 11 boards and two assists,
Lindsay Nesburg scored 10 with four rebounds, Danielle Ward scored five
with 10 boards, four assists and two steals, Kelly Koon scored two with
three assists and Nicole Slater had three rebounds and two assists.
Onekama will open the Class D district tournament at home against Bear
Lake on Monday in a quarterfinal game. |
