Onekama vs. Brethren
Game 3

December 15, 2010

Everyone enjoys some time off from work, but too much can hinder progress and create unwanted challenges.  Severe weather caused the Monday contest with Mesick to be cancelled and rescheduled and left us missing some needed practice time.  With that the JV girls had not played in a game in an entire week and were only able to practice twice in that time.  This leads a coach to feel a little extra stress coming into the next game.

By the end of the pregame practice some of my stress had gone away as the team and I worked through some confusion and worked hard to improve on our game play.  We were fortunate to have the Bobcats come to Onekama for an added game as the Varsity played host to Baldwin who also did not have a JV team.  This would prove to be an exciting contest for us as our offense would show much improvement.  At the end of this contest, the winner was determined on the defensive end of the floor.  Some miscommunications by the Portagers allowed the Bobcats to capitalize on some easy baskets, and fouls gave them needed opportunities to make some key free throws which led them to a 35 – 28 win.

Energetic is the word I would use for our offense on this night.  We had worked on attacking the basket to score or pick up the foul in practice and that is exactly what we did.  We doubled our scoring output from the previous two contests and forced the Bobcats into 18 fouls on us.  Sierra Hull led the scoring with 8 points.  Kaitlin played in a different position for most of the game and ended with an impressive 7 points.  Nisha also moved to a different position and contributed 5 points.  Kaylan and Faith each added 3 points and Elizabeth finished with 2 points.

Backside help and boxing out were our downfall allowing too many easy baskets for the Bobcats.  Kaylan and Sierra Hull continued to lead the team with 9 rebounds each.  Kaylan also had an assist and Sierra a block and a steal.  Sami was close behind them again with 8 rebounds and a steal.  Elizabeth ended the game with a good overall performance of 4 rebounds, 4 assists, 4 steals and a block.  Faith, Nisha, and Kaitlin finished with 2 rebounds each and combined for 5 assists, 5 steals and a block.  Sierra Warner added a rebound, 2 blocks, and a steal to her stats.

Not having a win after 3 contests is hard for any team, but we have a good attitude and a good team and we’ll continue to improve every game.  We will host Mesick in a make-up game on Tuesday, December 21, 2010.
