Onekama tops Walkerville

WALKERVILLE — Onekama fended off a mid-game rally from Walkerville Friday night, and topped the Wildcats, 50-36, for the Portagers’ second straight win.

“We started all right, then kind of let up a little bit,” said Portagers coach Nathan Bradford.

Onekama (2-1, 2-1 WMD) jumped out to a 14-6 lead after the first quarter, before Walkerville (1-3, 1-1 WMD) closed the gap before the break at 22-18. The Wildcats were within five heading into the fourth, with the Portagers leading 35-30.
“In the second half we started clicking a little bit and finished it out,” Bradford said of his team’s 15-point final frame.

The Portagers’ Lindsay Nesburg had a team-high 19 points with five rebounds and five steals while Taylor Hagen scored 16 points with five rebounds and eight steals.

Also for Onekama, Danielle Ward scored five points with four rebounds, Jennica Mathieu had seven points and Nicole Slater chipped in three points with four steals.
