BRETHREN -- Maybe it was the spirit of homecoming, but the Brethren Bobcats showed signs of life despite losing 33-0 to Onekama Friday night.

In their first four games, Brethren faced double-digit deficits coming out of the locker room at halftime.

But the score at the beginning of the second half was a sporting 6-0 in favor of Onekama.

“Anyone here who saw the first half and the first part of the second half, the Brethren team...outplayed us,” said Onekama coach Jim Hunter. “I give a lot of credit to Coach Kemmler. It’s been a long, hard year for those guys. They came out here and they played. We, unfortunately, weren’t ready to play.” The Portagers eventually got into their groove despite a game ending injury for starting running back Quinn Matthews, who scored Onekama's sole first-half touchdown on a run with 7:10 to go in the first quarter.

But Brethren wasn’t going down so easy. Their defense held Onekama scoreless in the second quarter.

The Bobcats, despite racking up 134 total yards, 105 on the ground and 29 in the air, couldn’t get the ball into the end zone either.

“First half we came out, and it’s probably the best we’ve played all season,” said Brethren coach Jason Kemmler. “Defensively, we were hitting on all cylinders. Offensively, we moved the ball.”

The second half was a different story. The Portagers received the ball and, two plays later, Tyler Fogarty ran in a touchdown with 10:37 left in the third quarter.

Their two-point conversion attempt was unsuccessful, making the game 12-0.

Quarterback Adrian Norman ran in a touchdown with 53.6 seconds left in the third quarter. A successful two-point conversion made the game 20-0. Tyler Fogarty was the next Portager to make it to the end zone. The score was now 26-0. With 3:54 left in the game, Norman scored another touchdown on a quarterback keeper.

Onekama’s extra point kick was good, making the final score 33-0. “I’m very pleased the kids did come back,” Hunter said.

Onekama had 366 total yards, all rushing. Tyler Fogarty had 152 yards on seven carries and two touchdowns. Matthews had 73 yards on 7 carries and one touchdown. Norman had 64 yards on 14 carries and two touchdowns.

Jared Miller led the Portagers with tackles at 17. Tyler Fogarty had 12. Raul Torres had ten tackles, seven of them for losses, and a fumble recovery.

The win brings Onekama to 3-2 while Brethren drops to 0-5.

Despite the loss, Kemmler was encouraged.  “It shows that we can do this,” he said. “We just have to continue it for the entire game. It does show we are very capable of playing.”
