BENZONIA — As Tobi Schoedel rounded the final turn and headed down the straightaway, she never bothered to look over her shoulder.

The Bear Lake senior didn’t know if there was anyone nipping at her heels, but had a clear view of what was in front of her — nothing but the finish line.

While turning in the biggest performance of her career, Schoedel not only won a Division 4 regional title on Saturday at Benzie Central, but also helped lead the Bear Lake girls back to the state finals.

“I just really wanted our whole team to go,” she said. “I knew if I worked hard, everyone else would give their all.: The Bear Lake boys came through as well by capturing a regional title for a second straight year and will be heading to Michigan International Speedway this weekend.

“I don’t set those expectations,” Bear Lake coach Eric Ross said of qualifying for the state finals, “but I’m so proud to see they got what they worked for. It’s 16 weeks of hard work and if you don’t place here, it seems like it’s all for nothing. Obviously they didn’t want to put in 16 weeks of work for nothing.”

The Bear Lake boys defended their regional title, but it wasn’t easy. The Lakers finished in first with 52 points, just three ahead of runner-up Grand Traverse Academy, while Mason County Eastern (67) took third to round out the state qualifiers.

“We came here today looking for at least third to get to state,” said Bear Lake senior Lewis Bartlett. “We weren’t too sure if we were going to make it this year, then busting out with first place, it’s crazy.” The Lakers got it done with four of their seven runners posting personal-record times. Tyler Groenwald paced the team by taking fourth overall in 17:54, John Girven was sixth (18:00), Bartlett 11th (18:17), Ryan Pienta 15th (18:21) and John Michael Schoedel 20th (18:37) to round out the scorers.

“John Michael came out of nowhere,” Ross said. “He stepped up and ran an incredible race. He was not where he was supposed to be. He was ranked 33rd going into it and finished 18th (among racers part of a team). That’s a big deal.”

Bear Lake’s Alex Ringel was 23rd (18:51) and Shane Peterson was 34th (19:26).

Last year, the Bear Lake girls missed out on the state finals as a team while Tobi Schoedel and Jaylee Brown qualified as individuals. On Saturday, the Lakers made sure they’ll all be running together again.

“I’m really excited about them stepping up and making it to state,” Tobi said of her teammates. “It’s really cool my senior year.”

Despite succumbing to her typical pre-race nervousness that led to a lighter stomach at the starting line, Tobi stayed with the lead group early and was in front heading into the woods just shy of the two-mile mark to surprise her coach.

“Not to say we don’t expect that, but we’ve never seen Tobi there before,” Ross said. “She came around that corner and the look in her eye — I was cheering her on and I don’t think she heard a word I said. I said, ‘I will bet my life that she will not give that lead up.’”

She didn’t, and finished in 19:55, 12 seconds ahead of anyone else.

“If that’s not inspiring for the people who are on this team, the parents and anybody who watched that, I don’t know what is,” Ross said.

The Bear Lake girls took second with 62 points, behind of winner Grand Traverse Academy (37) and ahead of third-place Traverse City St. Francis (70).

Brown placed fourth overall in 20:26, followed by teammates Yumi Babinec (15th, 21:15), Kelly Babcock (27th, 22:12), Tristen Gleason (28th, 22:17), Danielle Ward (40th, 24:08) and Taylor Anderson (44th, 25:11).

“What they did today was so inspiring on every level,” Ross said of his runners. “I hope they keep that going next week.”
