CARSON CITY — Bear Lake used
Saturday’s 35th annual Don Baese Invitational as a feeler for the
future.
While the Laker girls finished sixth of 24 teams and the boys 14th
of 27, coach Eric Ross said, more importantly, they were
collectively able to size up the competition.
“I like (the invite) because the kids get to see who they’re going
to compete against in the state meet,” he said. “It’s good for these
kids to get exposed to it now. It’s to see how far they are ahead of
us, or how far we are ahead of them — one of the two.
“We’re seeing where we’re at,” he added. “And we’re just starting
our speed sessions, so hopefully we’ll be seeing even greater gains
in the upcoming weeks.” The Bear Lake girls team was lead by
Tobi Schoedel who finished 20th with a time of 21:05, while right
behind her was teammate Jaylee Brown who finished 21st in 21:06.

Yumi Babinec placed 53rd in
22:54 ahead of teammates Tristen Gleason (61st, 23:07), Kelly
Babcock (63rd, 23:11), Danielle Ward (77th, 24:11) and Taylor
Anderson (88th, 24:46).
“The girls did a great job,” Ross said. “Sixth in that field is
something to be proud of. They showed progress at this meet, and
after a mildly hard week of workouts, they showed they could hold
their own.”“The girls did a great job,”
Ross said. “Sixth in that field is something to be proud of. They
showed progress at this meet, and after a mildly hard week of
workouts, they showed they could hold their own.”
The Laker boys were led by John Girven in the time of 18:23 who was
followed by teammates Alex Ringel (18:43), Ryan Pienta (18:44),
Tyler Groenwald (18:57), Kyle Nettler (19:16), Lewis Bartlett
(19:28) and Stephen Verrett (20:02).
“The boys did a good job. They all ran good races,” Ross said. “And
again, the whole team is doing great right now. I’m happy with the progress we’ve made so far,” he added. “To me,
as long as our kids are trying is all that really matters. I love to
see their times drop, because it’s really representative with how
hard they’re working. This group of kids is doing a really good job
of that this year.”
