BALDWIN — The Onekama boys basketball team didn’t have to linger in the locker room long after Wednesday’s game.

That was a good thing.

The Portagers snapped a seven-game losing streak with a 49-46 West Michigan D League win against Baldwin.

“Like I tell the kids after the game, they don’t have to listen to a long speech,” said Onekama coach Jim Hunter. “If we win, I always kind of hope that motivates them because I talk a long time after a loss."

Skyler Kimpel had 22 points and 18 rebounds to lead Onekama (2-9, 2-8 WMD) and Adrian Norman had 16 points. Matt Monroe scored seven to go with his 10 rebounds.

The Portagers jumped out to a big lead early then had to weather the storm late while holding on for the win.

“We just felt good about it. It was nice to get one on the road, it was a tight game,” Hunter said. “To give up the lead late in the game and come back and still win the game was nice. The kids maybe understand a little bit more about perseverance.”

The Onekama junior varsity team beat Baldwin, 64-29. Quinn Matthews led the Portagers with 24 points while Logan Fogarty scored 11.
