Onekama fades in second half

MESICK — Onekama couldn’t extend its winning streak to three Wednesday, February 16th, in a 67-41 loss to Mesick.

“We just couldn’t put the ball in the hole,” said Portagers coach Jim Hunter, citing turnovers as an issue as well. “Our turnovers were just incredible ... we just shoot ourselves in the foot too much.”

Onekama (3-10) trailed 15-10 after the first quarter, and after watching the gap widen in the second, rallied a bit before the break, cutting the gap to 36-30.

“The kids made a nice run before the half,” Hunter said.
The Portagers had to be safe with junior Adrian Norman in third, however, due to foul trouble, which Hunter said hurt the offense some.

Mesick controlled the lead, and in turn, the win after taking a 52-38 edge into the fourth.

The Portagers’ Norman and Skyler Kimpel led the team in points with 14 apiece while Matt Monroe scored six with 12 rebounds and Kyle Acker grabbed 12 boards while chipping in a point.

The Onekama junior varsity team kept its undefeated streak alive in a 58-31 win over the Bulldogs. Leading the Portagers (13-0) in points were Quinn Matthews with 24 and Bryce Reckow with 19.
