Cougars top Portagers

ONEKAMA — Onekama is still in search of a win while Big Rapids Crossroads Charter Academy kept its undefeated start to the season intact after the Cougars topped the Portagers 85-43 in West Michigan D League action Tuesday night.

“The biggest thing that jumps out to me is the 25 turnovers we had,” Onekama coach Jim Hunter said. “We didn’t handle their press well, and that led to a lot of easy baskets for them.

“They looked like they were in mid-season form, and we just looked a long ways off from that.”
CCA (3-0, 2-0 WMD) jumped out to a 22-5 lead at the end of the first quarter and were able to cruise from there.

Onekama’s Ryan Pienta had a team-high 10 points while Skyler Kimpel and Austin Barnett each added eight. Kimpel led the Portagers (0-2, 0-2 WMD) on the boards with 10 while Kyle Acker came off the bench and grabbed eight boards.

However, scoring was few and far between for the Portagers as the Cougars took a 39-17 lead into the break and held a 65-37 advantage at the end of three.
