INTRODUCTION

 

Wood shop is an exploratory course of study designed to give the student a broad variety of experiences, information and knowledge in the field of industrial technology. Hands on approach will enable the student to perform layout and fabrication of a selected project through the use of various hand and power operated equipment.

 

MIDDLE SCHOOL SHOP

 

In order to successfully complete this course, the student will participate in all competency exercises, safety test and finish a selected project that matches the level and skill of each 6th, 7th, or 8th grader. 

 

COST

 

The OMS wood shop will require that all students wear ANSI rate safety glasses. Student with prescription glasses will either wear goggles or safety glasses rated to fit over the prescription glasses. Safety glass can be purchased for $3.00 or the school will provide glasses. The student will be responsible for the replacement cost for OMS safety glasses lost or damaged. If a student misuses or intentionally causes damage to a tool or equipment, the student may be held accountable for its repair or replacement. The student will be required to purchase all materials needed to complete the project. Cost will not exceed $3.00. The shop will provide all the necessary tools and equipment to complete the project.

 

COURSE OF STUDY

    

     Lecture, demonstration of lumber:

1.     Introduction to botany of the tree, its growth, structure and harvest.

2.     Wood identification of hard and soft specie.

3.     Lumber grading and pricing.

 

     Lecture, demonstration of hand tool:

1.     Layout/Measure devices.

2.     Saws/Planes and their function.

3.     Drilling devices.

4.     Hand tool exercise.

     Lecture, demonstration of power equipment function:

1.     Planer.

2.     Power Miter Saw.

3.     Router.

4.     Shaper.

5.     Table Saw.

6.     Drill press.

7.     Sanding and sand paper grit size.

      Lecture, demonstration finishes:

1.     Poly Wipe for enhancement.

 

GRADING

         70% Project

         30%  Competence  Exercises

                   Quizzes

                   Safety Test

                       Safety is a mastery skill and leaves little margin for error. All safety

                       test that do not obtain 100% will need to be taken over. All questions

                        missed will need to be written out with the correct answer. Test may 

                       be taken as many time as the student wishes for full credit.
