ALGEBRA

2010 - 2011

BALDNER 346

COURSE SYLLABUS

Topics of study include linear sentences, rates and ratios, proportion, linear functions, exponential functions, quadratic functions, polynomials, factoring second degree functions, and irrational numbers.

Our 50 minutes of time together each day will begin with the Problem of the Day. The Problem of the Day will be on the board when students arrive in class and should be copied into the students’ journal while attendance is taken. The Problem may be easy for some, difficult for others, and absurdly annoying to others. This is expected and should not result in frustration on the part of the student. Each should copy the problem along with the date into their journal. THEN, the students should solve the problem if they are able. If one is not able to solve alone, students should share their thoughts with neighbours; the solution shall then be revealed (and copied into the journal) to the delight of all.

Often, we will next discuss any issues that arose during the working of the Homework.

Then, we will have an Introduction of a New Topic, complete with anecdotes and relevancies.  After a brief discussion, we will partake of the Guided Practice: students trying their hand at the new concept. This could be students working together in groups, on the board, or in the lab. When it is deemed the students are comfortable enough to work alone, a practice assignment is given. This is called Homework

Students should plan on doing math problems at home every evening.

Students daily should bring pencil, paper, text, journal, and scientific calculator.

Quarter grade will be computed as follows:

20%     Participation – being in class on time, prepared with appropriate tools and appropriate attitude

20%     Journal – daily problems entered neatly in a bound, separate notebook; collected periodically and assessed for thoroughness, neatness, and accuracy

20%     Homework – daily practice collected often, corrected in class sometimes

20%     Quiz – a few homework problems done individually without help

20%     Test – a bunch of homework problems done individually without help

Semester grade will be computed as follows:

40%     Quarter 1 grade

40%     Quarter 2 grade

20%     Final Exam grade

Please, other than your calculator, no electronic devices in room 346.  [Please translate: phones, music devices, games, etc are not appropriate in the classroom!] No food or beverage other than water in a clear plastic bottle.

Insubordination or disruption of the learning process will not be tolerated and will result in immediate RTC procedures and loss of Participation points.
