ONEKAMA — The Onekama track and field team held a dual meet at home Wednesday against Mesick with the specific purpose of it serving as a warm-up for Saturday’s Division 4 regional.

The warm weather made sure that wasn’t a problem.

The Portager boys beat Mesick, 92-39, while the shorthanded Onekama girls lost, 79-52.

“The kids did well and accomplished both things,” Onekama boys coach Mickey Story said of getting a solid workout and winning as well.

Leading the way for the Onekama boys was Bobby Meyers, who took first in the 1,600-meter run (6:07) and 3,200-meter run (12:45), was part of the winning 3,200 relay team (9:16) and placed third in the 800 (2:34).

“He ran about four miles tonight,” Story said of Meyers. “He did a real nice job.”

Matt Monroe, Chase Calloway, Patrick Spalding,  Tyler Growenwald and Ryan Pienta all went home with three first-place finishes as well. Tyler Fogarty set a person record in the pole vault at 12-2 and in the long jump at 17-7.

Taylor Anderson led the Onekama girls with three firsts. She won the 400-meter dash (1:06) and was part of the winning 1,600 relay team (4:44) and 3,200 relay (11:39).

Elizabeth Schoedel took first in the 1,600 in 6:17, setting a personal record by 10 seconds.

Onekama girls results

The Portager girls were short three team members, giving them just nine. As a result, Onekama girls coach Bonnie Brown shuffled the lineup and had some of her distance runners working on speed.

“It was worth it,” Brown said of the dual meet. “We haven’t had a warm day and it was good for the kids to participate in that.”
