CUSTER — Onekama made it a clean sweep
Wednesday at Mason County Eastern, as both the boys and girls won
their third and the season’s final West Michigan D League jamboree.
The Portager boys took 11 top spots for a 225 point total while the
girls finished with 183 after winning nine events.
However, the Brethren track and field squads proved to be Onekama’s
closest competition, as the girls took second for the third straight
jamboree with 107 points and the boys finished with 71 points,
making the leap to the runner-up spot after finishing fourth in the
two previous jamborees.
“We’re still sitting behind Onekama, but going into this meet we
kind of wanted to try to advance in the conference as a team,”
Brethren boys coach Travis Walker said. “We talked about some things
and shifted some guys into events that they’re normally not in. It
wasn’t necessarily their best event, but they were able to go out
and get some more points for us today, and that ended up working out
to our advantage.
“It was a good meet going into the
conference championship.”
It was a similar story for the Bobcat girls.
“We’ve scored over 100 points in each of the conference jamborees
and I think that is a great accomplishment for our team of 10
girls,” Brethren girls coach Rob Isble said. “And it has truly been
a team effort, with teammates filling different roles or sometimes
sacrificing their favorite events for events that will better help
the team succeed.”

The Portagers, however, dominated the top
spots.
Winning events for the boys were Matt Monroe in the long jump (18-9
1/2), Chase Callaway in the shot put (39-9) and discus (124-4), Tyler
Fogarty in the pole vault, Patrick Spalding in the 110-meter hurdles

1,600-meter run (5:02.21) and the 3,200-meter run (11:49), Tyler
Groenwald in the 800-meter run (2:13.02) as well as the boys 3,200- and
400-meter relay teams.
Finishing first for the girls were Tobi Schoedel in the 400-meter run
(1:06.99), and the 800-meter run (2:49.81), Nicole Slater in the long
jump with a personal record (14-6), Ashley Rupert in the high jump with
a personal record (5-0), Taylor Hagen in the pole vault (8-6), and four
relay squads in the 3,200-, 800-, 400-, and 1600-meter events.
Onekama’s Jaylee Brown, who was a state
qualifier last season in both the pole vault and hurdle events, came
back from a season-long injury Wednesday and helped the 3,200-meter
relay team to first place while individually taking second in the pole
vault (7-6) and 1,600- meter run (6:25.12).
For the Brethren girls, Becca Priest took two top spots in both the 100-
and 300-meter hurdles while the 1,600- and 3,200-meter relay teams took
second. The 1,600-meter relay team consisted of Ashleigh Maier,
Brittannie Wiggins, Carlee Broughton and Mia Orlandi while the
3,200-meter team was made up of Wiggins, Jordin Wilks, DJ Johnson, and
Orlandi.
The boys were paced by Josh Fairbanks, Anthony Bence, Steven Jajo and
Kody Karash who took second in the 3,200-meter relay (12:12) while
Nathan Hobart was runner-up in the 1,600-meter run (5:12) and Aaron
Hillsamer placed second in the 400-meter run (1:03).
Rounding out the field for the boys was
third-place Big Rapids Crossroads Charter Academy (63) followed by Mason
County Eastern (60), Baldwin (51, Pentwater (38) and Walkerville (13).
For the girls, MCE was third (88) followed by Baldwin (36), Walkerville
(35) and CCA and Pentwater in a tie for sixth (34). |
