FRANKFORT — Despite being shorthanded, Onekama continued its dominance at the Frankfort Invitational Monday by finishing first in both the boys and girls competition.

The Portager boys took the top spot among six schools with 190 points, followed by Frankfort (93), Glen Lake (92), Grand Traverse Academy (68), Buckley (56) and Traverse City Home School (4).

Due to the invitational being rescheduled from Saturday, prior arrangements held the Onekama girls to just a field of 10 athletes. However, the Portagers didn’t miss a beat, topping the field with 125 points, ahead of Buckley (113), Frankfort (112.5), Grand Traverse Academy (102), Traverse City Home School (24) and Glen Lake (18.5).

“We were shorthanded a bit with the rescheduled event,” said Onekama girls coach Bonnie Brown. “But, we won the meet with 10 girls competing and won it by giving 110 percent.”
The girls took six top spots, including Ashley Rupert in the high jump (5-4) who shattered the school record she set last year by four inches.

Also for the Portagers, Yumi Babinec won the 100-meter hurdles (17.52), Jaylee Brown won the pole vault (8-6), Nicole Slater won the long jump (14-4), while the 400-meter and 1,600-meter relay teams also finished first.

For the boys, Patrick Spalding won three individual events in the 110-meter hurdles (17.30), 300-meter hurdles (44.53) and the high jump (5-6).

Rounding out the other eight first-place finishes were Tyler Groenwald in the 800-meter run (2:11.97) and 1,600-meter run (4:51.61), Chase Calloway in the discus (124-4), Tyler Fogarty in the pole vault (11-0), Matt Monroe in the long jump (18-2), and the 400-, 1,600-, and 3,200-meter relay teams.

The Portagers will be in action twice more this week with the West Michigan D League championship in Brethren on Wednesday as well as an invitational in Manton on Friday.
