ONEKAMA — It wasn’t like anyone was
waiting for Onekama’s annual Frostbite Invitational to live up to
its name, but on Friday it was the first time in recent memory that
it almost did.
“This is the first year it’s been cold,” Onekama girls coach Bonnie
Brown said. “We’ve always lucked out with the weather.”
While the temperatures were a bit chilly, there was no snow, rain or
frost in sight, so overall, the conditions weren’t a hindrance for
the athletes in the 13-team event.
In fact, Onekama didn't seem to be cold at all. The boys finished
2nd while the girls finished 3rd. The
kids did a nice job, despite the inclement weather," said Portager
boys coach Mickey Story, adding that the home event went smoothly
with all the volunteer help. "We're pretty lucky folks to have all
this help."The Portager boys
were led with six second place finishes including Patrick Spalding
in the 110-meter hurdles in 17.34, the team of Danny Brown, Chase
Callaway, Matt Monroe and Tyler Fogarty in the 400-meter relay in
the time of 47.79, Chuck Schoedel in the 3200 -meter run in
11.00.75, Fogarty in the pole vault (11-6) and Monroe in the event
he started just this year, the long jump with a leap of 19.5.5.
The girls had the Portagers’ lone
first place finish in the 400-meter relay. The team of Danielle
Ward, Miranda Hengy, Yumi Babinec, and Breezy Fink won with the time
of 55.12.

Tobi Schoedel won second in the 800-meter
run, while the team of Babinec, Taylor Hagen, Taylor Anderson, and
Schoedel took a silver in the 1600-meter relay in 4:38.15.
“I am so proud of everyone of my girls,” Brown said. “They all ran their
hearts out today in the wind and cold. They all did great. Every
athlete that participated today placed in the meet! Ten Athletes: 10+
medals!"
The Brethren Bobcats also turned in strong
performances at the Frostbite as the girls finished seventh and the boys
11th.
“I was quite pleased,” said girls coach Rob Isble. “I thought we did
really well. We had a lot of competition today, but they held their own
and did a really good job.”
Brethren’s Becca Priest led the Bobcats
with a third place in the 100-meter hurdles in the time of 17.65 and a
fifth in the 300-meter hurdles in 53.93.
Karen Lewis also scored points in the sprints, finishing fourth in the
100-meter dash and fifth in the 200-meter, in 13.92 and 29.73
respectively.
The boys only placed in one event, but coach Travis Walker was pleased
with the personal improvement.
“It was tough,” Walker said. “It was definitely an eye opener for a lot
of our kids. They see now where they have to improve. But, we had some
guys turn in some personal bests, so that was good to see.”
The Bobcats placed sixth in the 3200-meter relay, as the team of Aaron
Hillsamer, Larry Williams, Anthony Bence, and Zach Fairbanks finished in
the time of 11:15.39, while personal bests were recorded by three
Bobcats in Nathan Hobart in both the 1600- and 800-meter run, Hillsamer
in the 800-meter and Sanqua Cummings in the 300-meter hurdles. |
