MANISTEE — The Manistee Chippewas used balanced scoring Thursday to defeat the Mason County Central Spartans and Onekama Portagers in golf at the Manistee National Golf & Resort. Manistee totaled a final score of 179 to 189 for Onekama and 191 for Mason County Central. For the Portagers, Jake Matthews finished just one shot off match medalist’s Elzinga’s score, with Matthews shooting a 44. Teammate Alex Welch fired a 46, Quinn Matthews 48 and Derek Hobart a 53.

Jamboree at Pentwater vs. Walkerville
Onekama gets first win! The Onekama golf team picked up its first win of the season by defeating Walkerville in a West Michigan D League match on Tuesday at Oceana Golf Club. The Portagers won by 56 strokes, 174-230, to improve to 1-1 in the league this season and 1-3 overall. “I think we’re back to playing the golf we’re capable of playing,” said Onekama coach Mary Jo Zadow.
Jake Matthews fired the low round of the match with a 40, Brenner Johnson and Alex Welch both carded 44 and Skyler Kimpel 46. Playing, but not factoring into the scoring were Derek Hobart (47) and Quinn Matthews (49).

Home vs. Frankfort
Portagers shoot season-low 167  ONEKAMA — In its first home match of the season, the Onekama golf team turned in its best score to date in a 167-192 win over Frankfort at The Heathlands on Thursday. “It’s always fun to play at home,” said Onekama coach Mary Jo Zadow. “We shoot our best game at home.” For Onekama, Jake Matthews, Brenner Johnson and Skyler Kimpel each shot 41 to split match medalist honors while Alex Welch turned in a 44 to round out the scoring. Also playing for Onekama were Quinn Matthews (46), Sean Lowe (47), Brandon Bohannon (56), Richard Munoz (59) and Paul Cunningham (61). Onekama improved to 2-3 in dual matches this season.
Tues. April 27
Jamboree vs. BL/Brethren at  County Highlands
Bobcats edge Portagers by 2 shots
Onekama was led by Quinn Matthews and Derek Hobart, who both shot 46, while Skyler Kimpel and Alex Welch each carded 49. Brenner Johnson (50) and Sean Lowe (60) also played for the Portagers.
“I’m happy for Quinn and Derek, sharing low man positions,” said Onekama coach Mary Jo Zadow. “We struggled tonight. It was just a night of struggles.”
Thurs. April 29
Home vs. Mesick
New course record for Portagers
ONEKAMA — The Onekama golf team set a new team record on the front nine at The Heathlands during a win over Mesick on Thursday, 161-218.
Skyler Kimpel fired a 3-over 39 for his first match medalist honors, Jake Matthews and Brenner Johnson each shot 40 while Alex Welch and Derek Hobart both carded 42.  Onekama’s old record on the front was 163.
Playing for the Portagers (3-4), but not factoring into the scoring, were Quinn Matthews (44), Sean Lowe (50), Paul Cunningham (60) and Brandon Bohannon (61).
“Our goal tonight was to go out and shoot better than our last home match,” Onekama coach Mary Jo Zadow said of the Portagers’ 167 last week. “To set a new nine-hole record on the front nine makes it extra special. I’m very happy.”

Jam at MCE vs. Pentwater

Congratulations to the varsity golf team on their win in WMD Conference play last evening.  The Portagers defeated Pentwater who was unable to field a team of four shooters.  Jake Matthews was low man for the Portagers with a 43.  Brenner Johnson shot a 46, Alex Welch a 48 and Quinn Matthews a 52.  The team is now 2-2 in conference play and 4-4 in overall play.  They play again tonight, Wednesday, at home against Manton at 4:00 p.m.

Home vs. Manton
Jake & Quinn led the Portagers to a 165-222 win over the Rangers, each finishing the front nine with an equal 40, thus sharing match- medalist honors.  News Advocate Report

Jam at MCC vs. MCE
Onekama picked up a win by defeated Mason County Eastern, 178-205. Alex Welch was the low man of the day for the Portagers (6-4, 3-2 WMD), who picked up their second victory in as many days. “Alex has been Mr. Steady all season long,” said Onekama coach Mary Jo Zadow. “His game has varied the least over the course of the entire season thus far.” Jake Matthews shot 42, Brenner Johnson 45, Skyler Kimpel and Quinn Matthews tied at 51, and Sean Lowe was a shot behind at 52.
“At this point in time, I think I would be pleased if we were shooting in the high 160s,” Zadow said. “Tonight, we were a little bit off our game.”

Onekama finished third in the regular season  and also took third in Tuesday’s match at 354.
Brenner Johnson shot an 84 for fifth place to lead the Portagers for the first time this season, Quinn Matthews’ 88 was 10th overall, Jake Matthews fired a 90 and Alex Welch 92 while Sean Lowe’s 114 didn’t factor into the score.“We just couldn’t get past Brethren/Bear Lake to make them share second place,” said Onekama coach Mary Jo Zadow. “We made a run at them and just fell short.”
 

Mon. May 24 Exhibition Match at Bear Lake County Highlands The Brethren golf team defeated Onekama Monday in an exhibition match featuring players who don’t normally travel with the team. The co-op Bobcats shot 230, while the Portagers finished in 244. “It was an opportunity for them to experience match competition,” said Onekama coach Mary Jo Zadow. “The kids were really excited and enjoyed themselves.”
Colton Podbilski led the Bobcats with a 50, followed by Braden Bowling (53), Chuck Schoedel (55) and Samantha Mullet (73). Sean Lowe paced the Portagers with a 49, followed by Brandon Bohannon (56), Paul Cunningham (63) and Terry Jiaho (76).
Tues., May 25th The team plays at Manton's course, Emerald Vale, at 3:30 p.m. against Manton and Mesick.
 
Thurs., May 27th
The team plays Districts at Emerald Vale at 10:00 a.m.
 

Golf Terms for Parents new to the game

There are some changes to the WMD Conference line up this year. Baldwin and Crossroads do not have teams this year, so the conference now consists of, Onekama, MCC, Brethren/Bear Lake, Custer, Walkerville and Pentwater. When playing Conference Jamborees, all teams will be present, however it will be dual matches only.
