Sabers top Portagers April 13th

WALKERVILLE — The Manistee Catholic Central golf team started its season strong Tuesday with a 163-194 win over Onekama in a West Michigan D League Jamboree at the Willow Creek Golf Course in Walkerville.

Onekama was paced by Skyler Kimpel and Alex Welch who each shot a 46 while senior Jake Matthews and younger brother Quinn Matthews shot a 50 and 52 respectively. Brenner Johnson (53) and Sean Lowe (58) didn’t factor into the team score.

“We could have played better,” Portagers coach Mary Jo Zadow said. “It wasn’t the kind of start we would have chosen for ourselves, but we’ll bounce back.”

ONEKAMA — Construction starts at the top this year for the Onekama golf team’s rebuilding project.

The Portagers, who qualified as a team for a Division 4 regional last season, will be without their top two golfers in graduates Levi Capper and Drew Griswold. But, according to Mary Jo Zadow, the losses don’t hinder the loft of Onekama’s expectations.

“We’re looking to be, hopefully, as competitive as we were last year,” she said. “I think our strength, which may be a little bit hopeful on the part of the coach, is that we can fill in the shoes that were vacated by those who graduated last. "Those who are returning, will hopefully be able to fine tune their games to be able to post lower scores this season."

The Portagers hope filling the void will come naturally to seniors Brenner Johnson and Jake Matthews, Onekama's No. 3 and 4 golfers from a year ago.

“We’re of course going to miss Levi and Drew, but I’m hoping that Jake and Brenner can fill those shoes, and they seem to be occupying those shoes well.”

Outside the two seniors, Onekama’s roster consists of five juniors, two sophomores and three freshmen. “We’re kind of a mixture of 12 individuals with great diversity of ability,” Zadow said. “We should be able to post some strong team scores.”

Outside of the pair of seniors, Zadow expects to see lower scores from returners junior Skyler Kimpel and sophomores Sean Lowe and Alex Welch. There’s also a promising duo of newcomers who practiced with the team last year as eighth graders in Derek Hobart and Quinn Matthews.

“We’re hoping that Skyler can step up his game a little bit,” Zadow said. “Then we’re hoping that Quinn, Derek, Alex and Sean can contribute at their more noviced level.”

Though it’s not the same Portagers of a year ago, Zadow doesn’t see that affecting the quest for the same type of goals on the course.

“We’re always hopeful that some year, I’m not saying it will be this year, but some year, we’ll be able to get past regionals and make it to state,” she said. “Our goal is always to get out of regionals and get to state for the first time as a team and be able to compete down there.

“Nobody wants to look past any competition of course, but I’m sure we’re counting on getting out of districts (again), getting to regionals and then focusing on the ultimate goal.

“We’re just hopeful that we can put it all together.”
