Onekama vs. Manistee Catholic Central

The second half of the season looks to be an exciting one as each team tries to prepare for what they’ve seen from their opponents for a second meeting.  The Portager’s first rematch would come against the Sabers.  In the first meeting of these inner county rivals the Portagers went home with the win by only a 6 point difference.  It was a close but low scoring event.  The second meeting would prove to be even more exciting with almost double the score and even more on the edge of your seat action.

Right from the start you could tell that this game was going to come down to the wire.  The largest lead at the end of any quarter was only 4 points.  On paper each quarter ended with the Portagers in control with the lead, but if you were in the stands this game could have went either way.  At the end of 4 quarters though, it would be the Portagers who would prevail by a score of 43-41.  It was a back and forth battle the entire contest, but the Portagers would not be denied the win or the sweep of the Sabers for this season.

The offense was very well balanced with 5 of the 6 girls scoring and 3 within 1 point of each other.  The Portagers worked the ball around very effectively and took advantage of what they created.  Lindsay, Nicki and Emily led the team in scoring with 12, 11, and 10 points respectively.  Danielle followed with 7 and Kelly finished with 3 points.  The unselfish play of the Portagers was the key to victory in this contest.

The defense played hard the whole game.  The Portagers allowed a lot of points, but came up strong when it was needed most.  This is a true sign of a good team.  Danielle gave another commanding performance on defense with 15 total rebounds, 2 steals and a block.  On the other side of the paint, Nicki also made her presence known with 9 rebounds, 5 steals (team high) and 2 blocks.  Lindsay added to her stats with 5 rebounds, 2 blocks and an assist.  Emily grabbed 4 boards and 2 steals.  Kelly had a well rounded game with 3 rebounds, 2 blocks, an assist and a steal.  Kaylan finished the game with 2 rebounds.

This was another stressful game for the Portagers, but they rose to the challenge and added another notch to the win column.  The JV Lady Portagers are now 6-2 for the year.

The JV squad will travel to Walkerville to assist the Varsity on January 26, 2010.  Walkerville doesn’t have a JV squad so the next JV game will be on January 29, 2010, when the Portagers host the Lakers for a second meeting.  The game starts at 6 pm and we hope to see you there.
