Onekama vs. Big Rapids Crossroads Charter Academy Game 14

February 19, 2010

The first game back after a loss is always an unsure one.  Add that to not playing a game in a week and it can be a mixture for disaster.  In practice you try to move on to the next challenge and put the past behind you and that was the obstacle we faced.  All the way to the game everything seemed to be going as planned, but not until tip-off can you tell how everyone will play.

After only a couple minutes the tone of this game was set.  You could tell this was going to be a defensive, but low scoring game.  The Portagers jumped all over the Cougars with their tough defense, but the offense would come and go.  The Portagers jumped to an 11-3 lead in the first quarter, but the troublesome second quarter stall happened once again and the Portagers only added 2 more points.  Luckily the defense never stalled and the Portagers went into halftime with a 13-5 lead.  The Portagers came out in the second half and worked out some of the kinks.  They put another 17 points on the board while holding the Cougars to only 4 more points in the whole second half.  The Portagers played hard and it showed as they won their 11th game of the season with a score of 30-9.

This was a great game for the whole team which ended with everyone getting to contribute to the scoring.  Nicki started out on fire with a couple of steals leading to baskets and finished with a team high 9 points.  Lindsay ended the game with 8 points and Danielle added another 6 points.  Kaylan put 4 points on the board while Katelynn finished with 2 and Kelly with 1.

As I mentioned, the defense was the key component to this contest.  Holding a team to less than 10 points is a serious accomplishment for any high school team.  Danielle was certainly the leader of this contest grabbing 24 rebounds, 3 steals and adding an assist.  Nicki followed with 7 boards, 6 steals, 2 blocks, and 2 assists.  Lindsay and Kaylan each finished with 3 rebounds.  Lindsay also had 2 assists, 2 steals and a block while Kaylan also had a steal.  Katelynn and Kelly finished with 2 rebounds and Kelly added 5 steals and an assist.

This was a great game to get back on track before the final game of the season.  Our last match-up will be against our inner county rival the Brethren Bobcats.  Our last meeting left us a little short as the Bobcats hit a last second shot to win.  The Portagers will be going into this contest looking for redemption on the night we honor the parents of our wonderful athletes.

The Portagers will try and finish the season with their 12th win, and prepare themselves to assist the Varsity as they prepare for Districts next week.  The game is February 23, 2010, and starts at 6 pm.  We hope to see you there.

Go Portagers!
