JV Girls Win Again

Onekama vs. Manistee Catholic Central – Game 12
February 9, 2010

It was a night where the Portagers were supposed to host the Panthers of Baldwin, but due to low numbers the Panthers had to cancel their JV game.  Fortunately, the Sabers were in the same boat and didn’t have a JV game scheduled so they were willing to come over and play a third game against the Portagers.  In the previous two contests the Portagers came away with the win, but by only 6 and 2 points.  The Portagers knew that they would have to play a good game to get a third win against the Sabers, and they came in ready for the challenge.

The Portagers stepped up right away with the defensive pressure and it paid off.  The first quarter ended with a 17-5 lead for the Portagers.  The Sabers made a run in the second quarter, but at halftime the Portagers still went into the locker room with a 10 point lead.  The game seemed to be in cruise control in the second half and ended in a 49-33 victory for the Portagers.  This was also a milestone game for the JV squad as it surpassed last year’s win-loss record.  The team played a good game and played hard the whole time.

Before the game, I told the team that I wanted at least 3 of them in double digits.  They took it to heart and did it!  Lindsay finished with 17, Danielle finished with 12, and Kelly finished with 10 points (personal best).  Adding in the final touches were Emily and Katelynn with 4 points each, and Nicki with 2 points.  It was a good win for the Portagers and the girls played a nice “team” game.

The defense was equally impressive grabbing 44 rebounds, adding 17 steals, 2 blocks, and 6 assists.  All this while only committing 6 fouls by the whole team.  Nicki controlled the boards in this contest bringing down 13 rebounds.  She also had 4 steals, a block and an assist.  Lindsay battled around the boards too and grabbed onto 10 rebounds and added 4 assists to her game.  Danielle pulled in 9 rebounds, had 5 steals and an assist.  Kelly played her best game of the year on both ends, but on defense she had 8 rebounds, 5 steals and a block.  Emily and Kaylan each had 2 rebounds and Emily also had 3 steals.  The good defensive play led to many scoring opportunities.

This game was definitely a high note going in to the next contest against Mason County Eastern.  MCE gave the Portagers their first loss of the season, and we are looking forward to the rematch.  The game will be on February 12, 2010, and start at 6 pm.  We hope to see you there.
