The Onekama junior varsity team beat MCC on Friday night, 28-22.

Lady Portager basketball started off on the right foot with wins by both squads at Saber country on Friday evening.  The JV squad went in with short numbers, but a lot of hard work and heart would bring them to the finish they desired.  This game ended in a low scoring, defensive battle for the Portagers.

Offensively, Lindsay led the Portagers with 10 points.  Emily was right behind her with 9 points.  Danielle finished with 5 points and Nicki with 4 points.  Kelly started in her first high school game and played like she was returning for her second year.  We struggled scoring in the first half of play which ended with a score of 9-3, but in the second half the offense worked the ball around more effectively and took advantage of opportunities given to them.

Defense was the key component to the game for the Portagers.  Danielle led the defense in rebounding with 21 combined rebounds and had 2 steals.  Nicki was second with 7 rebounds and a team leading 5 steals.  Emily, Lindsay, Katelynn and Kelly contributed with a combined 13 rebounds and 10 steals.

The defense held the Sabers to 9 points through three quarters of play.  Fatigue played a major factor in the fourth quarter when the Sabers rallied back with 13 points.  Finding their second wind the Portagers held off the Sabers and finished the game with a score of 28-22.

The Lady Portagers are off to a great start and look forward to their next contest.  December 8th the Lady Portagers host Walkerville for the first home game of the season.  The JV team will join the Varsity for this contest as Walkerville was unable to field a JV squad.
