Portager JV  Win 3rd Game

Onekama vs. Bear Lake, December 11, 2009

This game would prove to be an interesting one with county rival Bear Lake.  Both teams were confronted with the obstacle of not having practice for the 2 days prior to the game.  Additionally, the Portagers had not played an entire game for an entire week.  This change of pace showed right from tipoff as the Portagers looked very slow up and down the court.  Shooting was also a problem with the Portagers trailing the Lakers 2 to 7 at the end of the first period.

The Portagers put up a strong defensive stop in the second period and held the Lakers scoreless.  They also found a little offense to finish the first half with an 8 to 7 lead.  The second half showed new life for the Portagers who scored 20 total points with 13 coming in the third period.  The defense continued to be strong and only allowed the Lakers 9 more points in the second half.  The Portagers improved their record to 2-0 (2-0 conference) with the win!

The Portager offensive was led once again by Lindsay with 10 points.  Kelly and Danielle followed with 7 points each and Emily and Nicki each contributed 2 points.

Opportunities were there and taken advantage of, but the ball seemed to refuse to go in the hoop on most of their attempts.  The Portagers kept their heads up and moved forward for the win.

“Defense wins games” is the quote that best fits this team.  Holding the Lakers to under 20 points was a big bonus and showed what this team is all about.  Danielle showed true power underneath pulling in 16 rebounds and adding 5 steals to her game.  Lindsay followed with 10 rebounds and Nicki finished with 9 rebounds and 3 steals.  Kelly added 5 rebounds and 3 steals to her stats and Kaylan finished with 1 rebound in her first JV contest.  Emily led the team in steals with 8 and also finished with 3 rebounds.

Any game you win is a good one, but a great team is determined by how they react to the adversity they overcome.  A true team effort is seen with these young ladies every game and we look to improve with each future contest.

Lady Portagers basketball continues Tuesday, December 15th, at Mesick.  The JV game starts at 6 pm.  The Portagers are looking forward to another great contest!

Go Portagers!              Coach Torrey

Bear Lake Game Report:  We started off the game with a bang leading 7-2 against the Portagers, but then they transitioned into a different defense to stop our run.  We held on, but the third quarter got us.  The Portagers scored 13 points and we only scored two points.  We couldn't get enough points in the fourth and both teams scored seven points.  The Bear Lake Lakers were led by Sam Mullet scoring ten points and hauling down five rebounds.  Breanna Fink, Taylor Anderson, and Katie Mortenson each had two points.  Breanna Fink led the team with five steals and Katie Mortenson led the team with seven rebounds.  We struggled with shooting.  I told the girls that if we don't shoot we can't score, and if we can't score then we can't win the game.  It was a tough game and we can't wait to play them at their place.    ~Coach Bradford
