Portagers hope to stay perfect

MANISTEE — One week into the season, most teams have a pretty good idea of where they stand, as well as their upcoming opponent.   For Onekama, that’s only partially true.

The Portagers (1-0, 1-0) rolled to a road win against Mid State Activities Conference-North opponent Big Rapids Crossroads Charter Academy last week, and got a feeling for what they did right and what areas need improvement.

“There were a lot of nice things at the Crossroads game, but there were also a lot of things to work on, which happens every year in the first game,” Onekama coach Jim Hunter said of his team’s 36-6 win. “I think a football team probably improves the most between its first and second game, and part of that is that you finally have something to really evaluate. A scrimmage gives you some kind of a look, but it doesn’t come close to matching what you do in a game.”

However, the Portagers are a bit unsure of what they’ll face today when they host a conference game against Baldwin (1-0) at 4 p.m.

The Panthers drew a forfeit win in the first game against Wyoming Tri-Unity Christian, and since Hunter was unable to get a tape of Baldwin’s scrimmage, the Portagers are going in a little blind.

“Baldwin is going to be a tough look for us since we didn’t get a look at them,” Hunter said. “The only good thing about it is that I’ve coached against Doug Bolles for a number of years and unless he’s radically changed what he does, we have a pretty good idea of what they like to do. They’ll pose some problems.”
