FRANKFORT — Despite causing seven
turnovers, Onekama lost to Frankfort, 27-0, Friday night in the
Portagers’ last game of the season.
“On the stat sheet we won, on the scoreboard we did not,” Onekama coach
Jim Hunter said of his team’s two interceptions and five fumble
recoveries. “Usually when you do something like that, you stand a bit of
a chance. But unfortunately our turnovers (two) and some of our
penalties happened when we were down in close — a few missed
opportunities on some passes when we got people open and just couldn’t
finish the play really cost us.”
After two scores in the first quarter, the Panthers held a 13-0 lead at
the half, and extended the margin with a touchdown in each of the third
and fourth quarters.
Onekama Senior Thomas Koon went 3-of-13 passing with 27 yards and one
interception, while rushing for 63 yards on 16 carries. |
Jordon Zupin led the Portagers (4-5, 3-1
MSACN) on the ground with 91 yards on 15 carries, while fellow senior
Jake Matthews ran for 17 yards on 14 carries.
Onekama’s Adrian Norman had two receptions
for 18 yards while Skyler Kimpel had one reception for nine yards.
Defensively, Tyler Fogarty led the Portagers with 16 tackles, while
Jared Miller had 10 and Raul Torres had eight, all in the second half.
Frankfort (7-2) had 298 total yards and 17 first downs to Onekama’s 200
total yards and 11 first downs.
“I thought the kids played really hard,” Hunter said. “We had 200 yards
and a chance for a lot more on some near misses. You’ve got to make some
of those plays. You’re not going to make them all, but we didn’t make
any of them. That was the difference right there. A couple of them could
have gotten in the end zone and made it a tighter game and then you
never know what could have happened.
“I don’t fault their effort, but our execution just wasn’t what it
needed to be.” |
