HOLLY —
The Bear Lake High School cross
country team had a solid showing at
the Nike-sponsored Holly
Invitational on Saturday, featuring
some of the best squads in the
state.
The Laker boys and girls both
finished third in their division,
while Chuck Schoedel, Jaylee Brown
and Tobi Schoedel all posted top-10
finishes.
“Everyone ran a great race,” said
Bear Lake coach Eric Ross. “It went
well. The kids did awesome.”
On top of winning team medals for
third place, six of the seven Bear
Lake boys and four of the seven Bear
Lake girls medaled as individuals
for finishing in the top 35. “To get
a medal at Holly, you had to do
something,” Ross said.

The race was split into five
divisions. The Bear Lake girls took
third with 101 points, while Grand
Traverse Academy took first with 67.
Munising won the boys race with 60
points, while the Lakers came in
with 105.
Brown was the top overall finisher for the
Lakers, taking third in 20:54, while Tobi Schoedel took seventh in
21:30. Also finishing for Bear Lake was Elizabeth Schoedel (16th,
22:23), Danielle Ward (35th, 24:26), Samantha Mullett (40th, 24:52),
Yumi Babinec (41st, 24:59) and Taylor Hagen (44th, 25:25).
Chuck Schoedel finished fifth in 17:21, Josh Goins took 20th in 18:41,
followed by Tyler Groenwald (25th, 18:52), Alex Ringel (27th, 19:06),
Ryan Pienta (28th, 19:09), Danny Brown (32nd, 19:17) and Weston Brooks
(38th, 19:33).
Normally, the Lakers run in the Ludington Invitational at West Shore
Community College at this time of the season. However, Ross said he
thought taking the runners to Holly would be more beneficial in the long
run, as will upcoming trips to Carson City and Portage.
“At this race, we saw nine of the top 29 teams in the state from last
years’ state finals results,” he said. “We would have never seen any of
them if we didn’t go. We’ll see the other third of the teams at Carson
City and the other third at Portage. It lets the kids know where they
stand.” |
