BENZIE — The Eldon Moss Invitational, held in Benzie on Saturday, was the first event of the season for both the Manistee and Bear Lake cross country teams. Manistee ran in the red division which consisted of class A and B schools while Bear Lake ran in the white division, consisting of class C and D schools.

Bear Lake took a second and third place finish as the boys placed second in 1:32:06 for 74 points, and the girls finished third in the time of 1:55:25 for 95 points.

Both the Chippewa boys and girls teams finished in 13th place — boys finishing in the total time of 1:45:52 for 367 points and the girls finishing in 2:02:21 for 333 points.  “That was the toughest competition we’ll face all year,” Manistee coach Eric Thuemmel said. “So, I’m not down about finishing where we did.”

The top finisher for the Manistee girls was Kelly Schubert in the time of 19:53 — good for 16th place. “Kelly ran a fantastic race,” Thuemmel said. “She’s been working hard all summer, and it’s paid off. Not only was her time over a minute faster than her best time last season, but it’s the fastest 5K time recorded by an MHS girl in the past 12 years, maybe longer. To perform the way she did in the rain and mud was outstanding.”  Also finishing for the Manistee girls were Lacey Krolcyzk in 24:23 (71st), Erin Crothers in 25:20 (80th), Allie Mallison in 26:00 (81st), and Courtney Stefanski in 26:45 (85th).

The Manistee boys were led by freshman Jarrett Deisch who finished in the time of 18:05 for 42nd place.

“Jarrett had the fastest time of all the freshmen racing today by 40 seconds, and that’s against 30 schools,” Thuemmel said. “He outdid my expectations for his first high school race, and he sure didn’t run like a freshman.”

Also for the Chippewa boys, Brian Fisk finished in 20:17 (74th), Tyler Sievert in 21:43 (79th), Jon Bailey in 22:33 (84th), Trinity DeRooy in 23:14 (88th), Nathan Morang in 23:59 (89th), and Trent Schmeling in 25:06 (90th).

“We had three freshmen and two sophomores in our top five for the boys today,” Thuemmel said. “When your varsity is led by five underclassmen, you can be negative and say you’re in for a long season, or you can look at the positives and think about how much you can improve. Our returning runners averaged three to four minutes faster than their first races last season. Brian Fisk was five and a half minutes faster than a year ago. He’s run hundreds of miles this summer and it’s paying off.

“I’m excited to see both our boys and girls teams progress throughout the coming season.”

Chuck Schoedel came in first for the Lakers with a time of 17:58 (9th overall).  Alex Ringel led the second place boys with a 14th place finish in 18:19 while Tyler Groenwald finished 16th in 18:23, Josh Goins was 17th in 18:24, Dan Brown finished 28th in 19:02, Ryan Pienta was 31st in 19:10, and Weston Brooks was 33rd in the time of 19:11.

The Bear Lake girls were led by sophomore Jaylee Brown who finished in fifth place in the time of 21:07. Brown was followed by Tobi Schoedel who finished 13th in the time of 22:19, Elizabeth Schoedel who finished 19th in 22:39, Danielle Ward was 41st in 24:40, Taylor Hagen was 42nd in 24:40, Yumi Babinec was 51st in 25:23, and Taylor Anderson finished 56th in 25:45.

The Lakers’ JV squad took a seventh place finish overall and were led by Robert Myers in 19:40 (33rd), Lewis Bartlett in 19:48 (41st), Patrick Spalding in 20:25 (60th), Stephen Verrett in 20:27 (61st), Kyle Nettler in 20:37 (67th), Parker Sternberger in 22:50 (108th), and Roger Mullet in 26:10 (134th).
