ONEKAMA — The Brethren boys basketball
team rallied in the second half for a 48-39 West Michigan D League win
over Onekama Tuesday night to close its regular season.
After being held to just 16 points in the first half, the Bobcats
outscored the Portagers 32-17 the rest of the way.
“We came out really flat-footed and were standing around,” said Brethren
coach Alex Sexton. “We took control of the game in the second half with
our press. It was a great team win.”
Wade Milnickel had 10 points to lead the Bobcats (9-11, 8-8 WMD), Josh
Sexton scored nine, Eddie Lodin, Roddy MacNeil and Dennis Winek had
eight apiece, David Conrad scored three and Nick Witucki had two points
and four assists. |
Skyler Kimpel led the Portagers (4-14, 4-11
WMD) with 12 points, Jake Matthews scored 10, Joe Kosiboski had five,
Ryan Pienta four, Chase Callaway and Matt Monroe three apiece and Thomas
Koon two.
Onekama led 12-10 at the end of the first quarter and 22-16 at halftime
before falling victim to Brethren’s full-court press.
“We played as good a first half as we have all year long on offense and
defense,” said Onekama coach Roger Smith. “In the second half they
pressed us and we had too many turnovers.”
Onekama managed just 11 shot attempts in the second half.
“The biggest thing is we just didn’t take care of the ball in the second
half,” Smith said. “You can’t score much when you only have 11 shots.”
Onekama's JV defeated
Brethren 52-36 at home. Quinn had 15 points, Tanner 12, Joe 9, Derek
6, Bryce 5, Tyler 3 and Richard 2.
