¡Bienvendios a la Clase de Español!

November could not have started off any better.  The students are right back in the swing on things and are healthy once again!  These OCS students are tough.  Nothing slows them down, especially in la clase de español…

Spanish 6th grade:  This week the students finished learning all of the colors in Spanish and are now able to put together short grammatically correct sentences about singular subjects (ie, the apple is red).  During the rest of November they will learn how to count from 0-30 and tell time on the hour and half hour.  They will also be able to write sentences using plural subjects (ie, the apples are red).  On Fiesta Fridays, the students will investigate the meaning of a Spanish speaking country’s flag and then they will create a flag that represents what is important to them.

Spanish 7th grade:  The students are in the middle up their unit on weather.  They have completed beautiful 2010 calendars.  Next week they will create a power point in Spanish telling about Michigan’s weather and geography.  I can’t wait to see how wonderful these will turn out!  During the second half of November, the students will begin the Unit Cuerpo (body).  In this unit they will review important vocabulary as well as leaning how to communicate how someone is physically feeling.

Spanish 8th grade:  We are wrapping up the Unit Ciudad (city).  This week they are completing the end of the unit project which is worth half of the unit’s test grade.  So far there are some amazing things being created!  This is such a creative class and they are always surprising me!  Next week they will begin the unit on numbers (0-1,000,000) and time.  Before the break they will write and perform an original skit about a person who is so busy and is having a hard time finding time to do it all…sound familiar to anyone?  There will also be a subasta (auction).  The students have been earning pesos (the Mexican currency) with which they will be able to bid on items in the auction...all in Spanish!  I will bring in items for the auction, but I also encourage students to bring in (with parent permission) an old toy or unwanted item from home that they could then auction off to earn more money.

Spanish I:  They are just starting lesson 3 of the second unit and they are so smart!  I couldn’t be more proud of how hard they are working.  Next week they will review how to discuss future activities (voluntary and obligatory).  They will be writing detailed letters describing Onekama Consolidated Schools and I know they will be wonderful!  The next quiz is scheduled for November 19.  Keep studying those flash cards!

Spanish II:  Just when I think I can’t push them any harder, they work even more.  Such an incredible group of students!  I look forward to this class every day.  They just finished the first lesson in the second unit.  We will continue the unit reviewing how to use the preterit (past) tense in Spanish.  They will finish this lesson before the break.

Parent-teacher conferences are November 24 (5pm-8pm) and November 25 (8am-11am).  No appointment is necessary and I look forward to seeing you!  As always, if your child would like extra help please remind him/her to make an appointment with me.  I am available before and after school as well as during seminar and lunch.  Feel free to contact me if you have any questions or concerns.  I realize it may be hard to help your child with Spanish, but reviewing the vocabulary flash cards is a tremendous help in your child’s acquisition of a second language.

Hasta Luego,
