¡Bienvendios a la Clase de Español!

¡Feliz año nuevo!  Happy New Year!  I hope everyone enjoyed a nice break from school.  It is hard to believe that there are only two weeks left before the semester exams…where did the time go?  With a heavy heart I will say good bye to the middle school classes as they head off to reading for second semester.  On the bright side, I know I will be graced with three more middle school classes that are equally hard working, smart and fun!

Spanish 6th grade:  The super sixth graders began their last unit on clothing.  This week they learned the verb ir (to go), packed a suitcase for an imaginary vacation to Mexico and presented it to the class.  The test for this unit is scheduled for Tuesday, January 12.  It will be sad to see this group leave the Spanish classroom.  We have had so much fun together!

Spanish 7th grade:  The splendid seventh graders started their last unit on La Persona (the person).  They reviewed vocabulary from last year on personality, physical descriptions and the verbs ser/estar (both meaning “to be”).  We are in the process of creating beautiful three dimensional hanging cubes that reflect their own life.  These are so good you might want to find a place at home to hang it!  It is just outstanding to see what they are capable of doing!

Spanish 8th grade:  The excellent eighth graders are working on their last project of the semester—a clothing commercial!  They are working hard developing a plan, filming and editing their Spanish advertisement.  Look for the finished products on the Spanish webpage.   It has been a real pleasure to teach this group—they are so bright and energetic and make my day that much more enjoyable!

Spanish I: The funny first year students started the last lesson in the third unit.  In this lesson, the students will continue conjugating present tense verbs (I study, we talk, they write, etc).  They are also learning to describe the frequency with which things occur (i.e., it rarely snows).   Also starting in January, the students will be creating piñatas on fiesta Fridays!

Spanish II:  The sensational second year students began the third unit this week.  We continue to review the preterite (past tense) verbs.  Before the exams they will learn how to use demonstratives (this, that, these, those) and create a three dimensional mobile showing correct grammar usage.  This class is just amazing…they work hard and love to use Spanish.  I am so lucky!

Semester exams start the week of January 18.  All Spanish semester exams are cumulative, however each student is permitted to bring one hand written note card to assist them when taking the test.  As always, if your child would like extra help please remind him/her to make an appointment with me.  I am available before and after school as well as during seminar and lunch.  Feel free to contact me if you have any questions or concerns.  I realize it may be hard to help your child with Spanish, but reviewing the vocabulary flash cards is a tremendous help in your child’s acquisition of a second language.
