Additional Shop Policies

for your safety and the safety of others.

 

1. The privilege of learning, working and producing items of real and lasting value in this shop is earned by:

     A. an attitude and behavior that demonstrates your respect

   for others, yourself and the teacher,

 

C.    an attitude and practices that demonstrate high value

    placed on craftsmanship, care for tools and equipment and

    care for the supplies and materials,

 

D.    an attitude and practices that maximizes safety for yourself,

         others and the teacher at all times,

 

E.     and a willingness to try it the teacher’s way, even if you

    have learned or are used to some other way.

 

2. Proper attire MUST be worn in the shop at all times or you will

    have to remain in the classroom while the others work in the

    shop. The following are preventable safety hazards in a shop

    setting:

A.     open-toed sandals or shoes – your toes help you balance as you stand and walk and there are too many ways to injure or lose them in the shop.  WEAR shoes or boots with non-slip soles.

 

B.     loose sleeves at the wrists – these can get caught in moving machinery and pull in your hand and arm or get

    caught on an object and hamper your safe handling of a piece of wood or the machine you are using.

    TAKE OFF the garment, roll up the sleeves, or push them up firmly so they will stay up on your arm
    and away from the hazard.

 

C.    loose clothing such as zippered sweat shirts or buttoned sweaters, jackets, vests, or other apparel that is open in front so that the ends could get caught up in moving machinery.

    TAKE OFF the garment or zip or button it up so no

     material is hanging loosely in front.

 

D.    loose or dangling jewelry such as bracelets, necklaces, chains can get caught in or on machines creating a hazard.

REMOVE these items before entering the shop.

 

E.     unprotected eyes are too precious to lose in an accident.

WEAR safety glasses or vision-correcting glasses over your eyes at ALL TIMES when in the shop. NO EXCEPTIONS.

 

F.     long hair (more than shoulder length) can get caught in

moving machinery and be ripped out of your scalp.

TIE it back or pin it up to keep your lovely hair looking lovely!
