Sports Editor — The Onekama and Manistee Catholic Central volleyball
teams met up for the second time in just eight days, but this time
around, it was different. The Sabers beat the Portagers last week in
four games, but while that game didn’t count in the league standings,
Onekama’s win over MCC on Tuesday night did.
After dropping the first game, the Portagers rallied for a four-game
win, 19-25, 25-15, 25-16, 25-18. “They worked together as a team,”
said Onekama coach Lanette Keith. “I told them they could do it. They
were loud and rowdy and played our game, and I think threw them off
theirs.”Stacey Keith led
the way for the Portagers with 18 points, including a pair of aces, to
go with 20 sets, two tips and a block, while Olivia Bolthouse had 13
points with two aces, 15 digs and a kill. Brooke Etheridge led the
Sabers with five aces, two assists and a kill while Alex Barnett had
four aces, six assists, three kills and a block.
While the Sabers prevailed in the first game, the Portagers rallied and
were in command the entire second game for the win to tie the match. In
the third game, Keith served up the first four points before MCC’s Alex
Barnett did the same to give the Sabers the lead. |
After being tied at 13, the
Portagers pulled away for the win as Chelsea Miller served up the final
four points. Miller finished the match with 11 points, including four
aces, to go with 32 digs and four kills.
In the fourth game, MCC’s Holly
Gamache served up seven straight points to give the Sabers an 8-0 lead,
but Onekama responded as Bolthouse served up seven straight points tie
the game at 8. The two teams stayed within a point until Keith got the
ball and served Onekama from a tie at 15 to a 21-15 lead. Miller served
up the final two points for the Portagers to finish off the win.
“Their serving was on tonight, the passing was on,” said coach Keith.
“They came in focused, not worrying about any one player on the floor
and just worked together. It was a good night. We needed it.”
Also for Onekama, Sherece Revolt had seven points, 32 digs and a
team-high 32 sets, Tabitha Bellinger had four points and 10 digs, Paige
Rutowski had two points, 23 kills and four kills, Erin Brown had two
points, Ashley Hobart had 25 digs and three kills and Katie Prielipp had
13 digs and six assists.
For the Sabers, Ashley Bauman had two aces, six kills, two assists and
five tips, Gamache had three aces and Danielle Proctor had an ace and a
kill.
