MANTON — The Onekama High School track and field team recorded a pair of top five finishes at the Manton Ranger Invite Friday.

The Portagers, who co-op with Bear Lake, had the girls finish fourth out of 15 schools with 69 points, behind first-place McBain (113), Manton (106.5) and Hesperia (73.5).

The Brethren girls finished 13th with eight points.

The girls also had two new school records set as Ashley Rupert broke a 14-year-old school record in the high jump with a leap of 5-2, while Jaylee Brown set a new school record in the pole vault with a height of 9-9, snapping a six-year-old mark by Jaime Meister.

“Ashley’s been working hard at the high jump and everything came together Friday,” said Onekama girls coach Bonnie Brown. “Perfect timing on her part with regionals Saturday, she should be pumped for that.”

Jaylee Brown, who took first place in the pole vault, 100-meter hurdles and 300-meter hurdles, said her back was hurting but, “my big brother Ryan was home from college and he gave me the inspiration and motivation to do it.”

The Onekama boys placed fifth out of 14 schools with 66 points, behind winner Manton (146), McBain (95.5), Hesperia (93) and Evart (78). The Brethren boys were one of three teams that didn’t score in the event.

“I’m very happy with how it went,” said Onekama boys coach Mickey Story. “It’s really good competition, probably better competition that we’ll see at regionals.”

The top individual finishers for the Portagers came as Parker Johnson took first place in the pole vault, Chase Calloway finished second in the discus and Jaron Llewellyn placed third in the 800-meter run.

Onekama freshman Jaylee Brown set the school record in the pole vault with the leap of 9-9 at Manton Friday.

Onekama's Ashley Rupert set the school record in the high jump with a leap of 5-2.

“Good weather, good times, good distances and good competion,” Story said. “I couldn’t be happier.”

The Portagers and Bobcats will compete in the final West Michigan D League jamboree Wednesday at Onekama before Saturday’s Division 4 regional at Frankfort.

“It’s going to be a tough meet,” Bonnie Brown said. “It’s probably one of the toughest regionals in northern Michigan.”
