Onekama Sweeps Top Spots

BRETHREN — At first, it looked like it was going to be a wet West Michigan D League jamboree Wednesday at Brethren.

But, the clouds cleared, and the only thing rained on was the parade of any team that wasn’t Onekama.

The Portagers took the top spots in both the boys and girls competition.

The Onekama boys scored 208 points with the help of nine first place finishes, and the Portager girls finished with 209 points and seven top spots.

“They did very well today,” Onekama girls coach Bonnie Brown said. “I switched the girls up today. I tried to get some different girls to get some points today, and they plugged in really well. They really stepped up to the plate and did what I asked of them.”

Portagers boys coach Mickey Story echoed the same approach to the jamboree.

“We did the same thing (as the girls),” Story said. “We moved some kids around, and that helped out a lot, because we had kids running three or four events and some were events they hadn’t run in before.

“Our focus today was to try to improve in the field events because last Wednesday we did not do well,” Story said. “Today we did much much better. Coming out of the field events in first place really helped with the running events.”

Cody Graf was among the nine boys and 16 Portagers to finish first.

Graf finished first in the 3200-meter run in 11:10.30.

“It’s hard to run when (there’s not as many people) pushing you,” Graf said of the four other runners in his heat. “But, we’re feeling pretty good. We’ve been putting a lot (of practice) into it this year.”

The event’s host Brethren finished third in boys competition (52) and fourth in girls (37).

“The boys team did a little better today than we did last time,” Bobcats’ coach Rob Isble said. “I think that’s pretty good for us right now since we’re a little light on our numbers.

“Myles (Burns) had another strong day for us,” Isble said of the Brethren senior who took two top spots in the long jump (19-9 3/4) and 110-meter hurdles (17.03).

“On the girls side of things — I’m still pleased with the people I have placing, but we didn’t go full strength in a lot of events today.”

Since the last two events for the Bobcats have been at their home track, Isble has spent his time watching his team from the scoring booth.

“As far as coaching, it’s pretty frustrating, like on Saturday and today the kids are totally operating on their own,” Isble said. “I set them up ahead of time and basically give them a sheet with their events before the race. They are responsible to get to their races and they’ve done a good job of that, but as a coach, when you’re tied in to working the event like this during your meets, it’s difficult.”
