Soaring at the State Finals
From News Advocate Staff Reports
In Division 4 action, Onekama freshman
Jaylee Brown not only took fourth place in the girls pole vault, but did
so by setting an Portager school record at a height of 10-3. “I was
amazed I was able to vault that high,” Brown said of her personal best
leap. “I was very focused on doing my best today.”
Onekama coach and Brown’s mother, Bonnie Brown, was also thrilled. “She
had a tremendous day of vaulting,” Brown said. “Everything she has been
working on this year fell into place at the right time and place. I
couldn’t be more proud of her as her coach and mom.”
Jaylee’s father and pole vault coach Jerry Brown has also been with his
daughter every step of the way this season. “As a coach I’d say ‘Jaylee
landed on the intersection of preparation and opportunity,’” Brown said
“As a parent I’m ‘Dancing in the streets’ proud of her.”
Onekama boys had four individual athletes competing as well as its
3,200-meter relay team.
Senior Jaron Llewellyn was the lone Portager to pick up points for
Onekama with his eighth place finish in the 800-meter run in the time of

The 3,200-meter relay team composed of Llewellyn, Tyler Groenwald, Ryan
Pienta, and Josh Goins was on place short of scoring points by finishing
ninth in the time of 8:26.1 as well as one second short of breaking an

athletes running in their first state finals, nerves are a big part of
it. But, she handled it really well and ran a good time.” |
