County stars shine in Brethren

BRETHREN — The Manistee County Meet, held in Brethren Tuesday, showcased athletes from Brethren, Manistee, and Onekama in a friendly non-team scoring competition.

“It was an end-of-the-year, best kids from each team duking it out sort of thing,” Manistee coach Eric Thuemmel said. “I think the big thing was those kids going to state get a chance one more time before finals to compete. Some were a little rusty because we’ve had 10 days since our last meet, so it’s a nice tune up for those kids and it’s a nice final chance for some of the seniors to run for the last time.”

Although score was not kept for the teams, each school had first place finishes.

Brethren’s state-bound Rebecca Priest had the Bobcats’ lone top spot in the 300-meter hurdles (52.212), the same event she qualified in for the state competition.

The Portager girls had the most gold medals, with five individuals and all four relay teams finishing first.

Onekama freshman Jaylee Brown took two individual golds in the 100-meter dash (17.428) and also set a school record in the pole vault at a vault of 9-10. Brown will be competing in both events at the state competition.

The Chippewa girls took seven individual top spots, led by senior and state-bound McKenzie Majchrzak with three top spots in the long jump (15-11 1/2) the high jump (5-2) and the 200-meter dash (28.371).

The Manistee boys took 12 top finishes, 10 individual golds and two relays.

Chippewas’ Dalton Zawacki, Carl Jaskiw and Anthony Krusniak all took two top spots, Zawacki in the long jump (18-6 1/2) and 100-meter dash (11.534), Jaskiw in the 110-meter hurdles (17.298) and 300-meter hurdles (43.181), and Krusniak in the 1600-meter run (5:03.06) and 3200-meter run (11:21.88).
