FROM Manistee News Advocate Staff Reports

BRETHREN — The Onekama track and field team recorded a pair of top-3 finishes at the Bobcat Invitational Saturday at Brethren High School.

The Portager boys took second out of nine teams with 105 points, finishing behind first-place Manton (182).

“I was very pleased,” said Onekama boys coach Mickey Story. “That’s the best day we’ve had this season.”

For Onekama, which co-ops with Bear Lake, Jaron Llewellyn, Patrick Spalding and Parker Johnson each placed in four events, while Cody Graf took first place in the 3,200-meter run and was part of the Portagers’ winning 3,200-meter relay team.

“That’s a pretty good day for Cody,” Story said.

The Onekama girls took third place out of 10 teams with 64 points, finishing behind first-place Manton (136) and Gladwin (107).

“The entire team pulled another one of their hat in taking a trophy in the midst of some pretty big schools,” said Onekama girls coach Bonnie Brown. “I can’t say enough about my 400 relay team. We had to juggle the lineup due to injury and they did a fantastic job not only working Taylor Hagen into the mix, but winning the event on top of that.”

The Manistee boys placed third with 78 points as Dalton Zawacki took first place in the 100-meter dash and Ryan Helminiak claimed the top spot in the high jump.

The Manistee girls placed sixth as McKenzie Majchrzak took first in the high jump and second in the long jump.

The Brethren boys took fifth with 29 points, while the girls placed eighth with 21 points.

“I thought we had some people who did really well,” said Brethren coach Rob Isble. “We were more shorthanded than usual with prom.”

Brethren senior Myles Burns took first in the long jump, second in the 200-meter dash and 110-meter hurdles and sixth in the 100-meter dash.

Rebecca Priest led the Brethren girls with a second-place finish in the 300-meter hurdles.

“Rebecca has been coming along strong the last few weeks,” Isble said. “Overall, I was happy with the meet and with some good competition.”
