Onekama boys,
girls move to 3-0 in league jamborees

ONEKAMA — The third West Michigan
D League Jamboree of the season was a little different than the previous
two — cooler, wetter, and for the first time, the sun was nowhere to be
seen.
But, for the host Onekama Portagers, there was nothing different about
Wednesday’s event.
Both the boys and girls Portager teams took the top spots, just as they
each have in the last two WMD jamborees, thus clinching at least a share
of the league title.
The other half will be determined at the conference championship meet
next Tuesday.
With the help of nine first place
finishes the girls ended with 177.5 points, while the boys had 210
points with eight top spots.
“It was a really good meet,” Onekama boys coach Mickey Story said. “I
don’t think (the weather) had a major impact on the events, so we were
very fortunate.”
Among the many highlights for the boys squad was foreign exchange
student Laust Merrild’s personal bests in the 1600- and 3200-meter runs.
Also for the Portagers, Patrick Spalding finished first in three events
— high jump (5-8), 110-meter hurdles (17.39), and 300-meter hurdles
(44.41).
“It was a little bit tougher running in the rain, but we’re still coming
in with pretty good times,” Spalding said.
Freshman Jaylee Brown took two individual top spots for the girls in the
pole vault (9-0) and the 100-meter hurdles (16.85). |

The Onekama girls also took first
in all four relay events.
The Brethren Bobcats girls and boys teams took a third and sixth place
finish respectively.
“I was pleased with how the girls performed today,” Bobcats’ coach Rob
Isble said.
The girls took two second place finishes with Megan Paskell in the
discus (80-4) and the 400-meter relay team of Karen Lewis, Rebecca
Priest, Ashleigh Maier, and Kailyn Ware (57.61).
Both the Portagers and Bobcats will be competing in regional competition
this Saturday in Frankfort. |
