Track & Field: Portagers Sweep Top Spots at First League Jamboree

From Manistee News Advocate Staff Report

CUSTER — In the first West Michigan D League Jamboree, Onekama finished in the top spot in both the boys and girls competition.

The day was filled with personal records being broken for the Portagers, and even a school record.

Freshman Jaylee Brown broke the 100-meter high hurdle record with 16.24. The previous record was held by Jaime Meister in 2003 (16.64).

Along with Brown’s first place finish in the 100-meter hurdle, the girls tallied eight other top spots en route to a first place 187 points overall.

“I’m very proud of all my girls’ efforts today,” Onekama coach Bonnie Brown said of the win. “We had a great personal record day. We’ve been putting in some pretty tough training and with the warmer weather it’s paying off. We had one goal in mind today — win our first WMD jamboree conference meet and we did that pretty handedly,”
“In preparation for the meet, we asked our girls to extend themselves in four events each, taking some out of their comfort zone. They showed great heart and the result was a fantastic win.”

Onekama boys had a similar outcome.

Seven first place finishes were among the 20-plus scoring finishes, which gave the boys 172 points, enough to top the other six schools in the competition.

“I was very happy with the outcome. It was a total team effort from everyone who participated,” Portagers’ coach Mickey Story said. “It was a great first Jamboree. (Jaron) Llewellyn had a great night tonight, with three firsts and a third, and freshman Cody Graf was involved with two firsts and a second, so he did a great job tonight, too.  “It’s nice because he’s just a freshman running against all these seniors.”

Coach Bonnie Brown reported, "The girls track team was victorious yesterday afternoon winning their first West Michigan D jamboree track meet with 209 1/2 points followed by Mason Co. Eastern with 84 points.  A new school record was set in the process by Jaylee Brown in the 100 meter high hurdles 16.24 breaking the old mark set by Jaimie Meister in 2003. It was a great personal record setting day all around.  Terrific job girls!  Next meet, the Bobcat Invitational on Saturday."
